In a Vase on a Monday: Tussie mussie

While browsing through Vita Sackville-West’s February notes in her „Garden book“ I stumbled upon the word „tussie mussie“. Just to pronounce it made me smile. A tussie mussie is a very old endearing term and refers to a posy of flowers or herbs which was usually given as a gift. A rather charming custom, don’t you think? The term comes from Queen Victoria’s reign in the 19th century when small posies became a fashion accessory. A tussie mussie would include floral symbolism from the language of flowers and therefore be used to send a message to somebody. Another rather lovely word for a flower posy is nosegay. Delighted to be joining in with Cathy’s meme today with my tussie mussie gathered from the garden. Bei der Lektüre von Vita Sackville-Wests „Garden book“ stiess ich im Monat Februar auf das Wort „tussie mussie“. Beim Aussprechen des Wortes musste ich lächeln. Ein tussie mussie ist ein alter, liebevoller Ausdruck für ein kleines Sträusschen mit Blumen oder Kräutern, das man üblicherweise verschenkte. Eine reizende Idee, findet ihr nicht? Das Wort geht zurück auf die Zeit Queen Viktorias im 19. Jahrhundert, als kleine Bouquets zum Modeaccessoire avancierten. Ein „tussie mussie“ enthielt Pflanzen mit symbolischer Bedeutung und vermittelte so Nachrichten an den Empfänger. Ein anderes entzückendes Wort ist übrigens „nosegay“ (=eine Freude für die Nase). Ich freue mich, heute bei Cathys Montagsvase mit meinem „tussie mussie“ dabei zu sein.
