In a Vase on a Monday: In Love with Life / Montagsvase: Verliebt in das Leben

The year is still young, but oh so much has been going on! It’s been quiet here and that’s partly due to my new book whose deadline is approaching and partly to things that have happened –planned and unplanned. Beginning of the year we finally got around to planting the winter garden which is situated below Pompeii. It was a rather wild corner and is now home to some Betula jacquemontii, a Prunus serrula, colourful Cornus, hellebores, snowdrops, Anemone blanda, primulas…there’s still room for small bits and I shall see what takes my fancy. Choice isn’t great around here which probably has its advantages. 😉  At the foot of the wall I planted three Hydrangea „Ayesha“ which I grew from cuttings. Shade in summer is scarce and I think they’ll like it here. This pic was taken beginning of February…(the white collars aren’t pretty but will hopefully keep Rudolf under control)

Das Jahr ist noch jung, aber so viel ist passiert! Auf dem Blog ist es ziemlich ruhig, was teils an meinem neuen Buch liegt, dessen Abgabetermin näher rückt und teils an den Dingen, die passiert sind –geplant und ungeplant. Anfang des Jahres kamen wir endlich dazu, den Wintergarten zu pflanzen, der sich unterhalb von Pompeji befindet. Es war die letzte zu gestaltende Ecke und beherbergt nun einige Betula jacquemontii, einen Prunus serrula, bunte Cornus, Helleborus, Schneeglöckchen, Anemone blanda, Primeln…es gibt noch Platz für Kleinigkeiten, die ich im Lauf der Zeit –trotz des limitierten Angebots– bestimmt finden werde. 😉 Am Fuss der Mauer habe ich drei Hydrangea „Ayesha“ gepflanzt, die ich aus Stecklingen gezogen habe. Schatten ist im Sommer rar gesät, und ich denke, hier werden sie sich wohlfühlen. Dieses Bild wurde im Februar gemacht…(die weissen Krägen sind eine Anti-Rudolf-Barriere)

Then I had three winning images in this year’s International Garden Photographer of the Year (IGPOTY) which was rather nice. 🙂 One of them landed on the cover of Amateur Photographer who asked me if I’d like to write an article on flower photography which will be published beginning of April, so watch out!

Dann hatte ich drei Gewinnerbilder beim diesjährigen International Garden Photographer of the year (IGPOTY), worüber ich mich sehr freue. 🙂 Eines davon schaffte es aufs Cover von Amateur Photographer, dessen Chefredakteurin anfragte, ob ich für ihre Leser einen Artikel über Blumenfotografie schreiben würde. Dieser erscheint Anfang April!

Then rather unplanned I had a bad riding accident during which I took mineral samples from the road at full gallop using my face as a probe, something I wouldn’t recommend as it’s very painful and one looks and feels horrible. But I realise that I was very lucky and I feel a lot better now, thankfully. Life and happiness are fragile things and one tends to forget this sometimes. Couldn’t leave the house for a while as I thought people would look askant at poor Monsieur who looked so well after me along with the head gardener. In those days I looked at the garden through the window and it smiled at me as always…here you can see Hyacinthus orientalis, the elegant parents of the chubby hyacinths you see everywhere these days. They’ve been flowering since February, are deliciously scented and will carry us right into bluebell season!

Schliesslich hatte ich einen bösen Reitunfall, bei dem ich mich in vollem Galopp mit dem Gesicht voraus in den Weg bohrte, eine äusserst schmerzhafte Erfahrung, die ich niemandem empfehle. Ich hatte grosses Glück, und mittlerweile geht es mir viel besser. Man vergisst schnell, wie zerbrechlich das Leben und das Glück sind. Ich sah so schlimm aus, dass ich mich eine Zeitlang nicht aus dem Haus traute, auch weil ich dachte, die Leute würden Monsieur etwas schief anschauen, dabei hat er sich gemeinsam mit der Obergärtnerin rührend um mich gekümmert. In diesen Tagen schaute ich durchs Fenster hinaus auf den Garten, der mich wie immer mit einem Lächeln belohnte. Hier seht ihr übrigens Hyacinthus orientalis, die grazilen Eltern der molligen, modernen Gartenhyazinthen, die man heute überall sieht. Sie blühen seit Ende Februar, duften herrlich und tragen uns hinüber in die Bluebell Saison!

Another thing we’ve finally attacked this year is the greenhouse. Monsieur has prepared the foundation for the new one which will be put up in a few weeks.

Eine anderes Projekt, das wir endlich angingen, ist das Gewächshaus. Monsieur hat derweil das Fundament für das neue vorbereitet, das in einigen Wochen aufgebaut wird.

On Saturday I learnt that my latest book „Genießen statt Gießen“ which is about water-wise gardening came 1st in its category and received the price of the reader jury of „Mein schöner Garten“ at the German Garden Book Awards ! It’s hard to describe how I feel…I’m over the moon really! So much love and work go into each of my books and this makes me so very happy. I’m grateful that I’ve survived my accident and that I’m able to enjoy this special moment in my life. I mean every moment is special, to be around and healthy and to do what one loves and is passionate about, to be surrounded by people you love and who love you – isn’t that all that counts?! So today’s vase is a celebration of spring, life, friends, happiness and passion. Thank you, Cathy, for being such a good friend and for inspiring us all. Letzten Samstag habe ich erfahren, dass mein aktuelles Buch „Genießen statt Gießen“ bei der Verleihung des Deutschen Gartenbuchpreises den 1. Platz in der Kategorie Gartenratgeber belegte und den Preis der Leserjury von „Mein schöner Garten“ bekam! Ich bin überwältigt! In jedem meiner Bücher stecken viel Liebe und Arbeit, und diese Auszeichnungen machen mich sehr glücklich. Ich bin dankbar, dass ich den Unfall überlebt habe und diesen speziellen Augenblick geniessen darf. Ich meine, jeder Augenblick ist speziell, auf der Welt und gesund zu sein, zu tun, was man liebt und wofür man brennt, von Menschen umgeben zu sein, die man liebt und die einen lieben – ist das nicht alles, worauf es ankommt?! Meine heutige Vase zelebriert den Frühling, das Leben, Freunde, Zufriedenheit und Leidenschaft. Danke, Cathy, für deine Freundschaft und dafür, dass du uns alle inspirierst.
